Txtshell is built so that we handle as little of your data as cryptographically possible. This policy explains what that means in practice.
By default, Txtshell runs entirely in your browser. Your notes are stored locally on your device (in your browser's storage) and encrypted with a key derived from your passphrase or passkey. That key never leaves your device and is never sent to us.
In local-only mode, your notes are never transmitted anywhere. We do not receive, store, or have any ability to read them.
Txtshell offers optional sync so your notes can appear across your devices. Sync is designed to be end-to-end encrypted: what leaves your device is a block of encrypted data with no key attached. Whoever stores that data — whether that is you (self-hosted) or us (cloud sync) — receives only ciphertext they cannot decrypt.
If and when you sign up for paid cloud sync, we process the minimum information needed to run the service:
We do not sell your data, and we do not use it to build advertising profiles.
We may use privacy-respecting, aggregate analytics to understand overall traffic and usage (for example, how many people visit). These do not identify you personally and do not access your notes.
Because your notes are encrypted with a key we never hold, there are things we are simply unable to do, even if compelled: we cannot read your notes, we cannot recover them if you lose your passphrase and recovery key, and we cannot hand your readable notes to anyone. This is a property of the cryptography, not just a promise.
Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete the personal information we hold about you (such as your account email). Because your notes are stored and encrypted on your side, you already control them directly — you can export or delete them at any time from within the app. For account-level requests, contact us at the address below.
Local notes remain on your device until you delete them. For cloud sync, encrypted data and account information are retained while your account is active and for a limited period after cancellation, after which they are deleted.
We may update this policy as the product evolves (for example, when cloud sync launches). Material changes will be reflected here with an updated date.
